Cultural Waste

Bassnectar’s Dorfex Bos. Coming to Montreal November 25!!!

I am the gypsy of cultural waste
I find things that people have made
for no straight survival purpose
whatsoever.christian-hidaka2
scavengers like me
find these artifacts
and recycle them
and give them new context
new life
new meaning.
I call these cultural waste
not because they waste time or space
or because they lack value,
but because these important commentaries
build up like residue
on the outer edges of society,
unappreciated,
while the artists and writers move forward
leaving behind a trail of what
once
mattered.

The Ninja Turtles are a great example of cultural waste. They’re still around some places, making appearances in random art like this and t-shirts and what not. One day, your Ninja Turtles lunch box will be worth a fortune.

One of Jeremy Dower’s creations with no reason other than to spook/trip you out:

A book called Rave Culture and Religion:
“The collection provides insights on developments in post-traditional religiosity (especially 'New Age' and 'Neo-Paganism') through studies of rave's Gnostic narratives of ascensionism and re-enchantment, explorations of the embodied spirituality and millennialist predispositions of dance culture, and investigations of transnational digital-art countercultures manifesting at geographic locations as diverse as Goa, India, and Nevada's Burning Man festival. Contributors examine raving as a new religious or revitalization movement; a powerful locus of sacrifice and transgression; a lived bodily experience; a practice comparable with world entheogenic rituals; and as evidencing a new Orientalism. Rave Culture and Religion will be essential reading for advanced students and academics in the fields of sociology, cultural studies and religious studies.”
--it’s funny, because I often think the same things about raving.

Check this out. I saw him last Friday. His cell was a magical work of art. I came out of there bruised. I almost couldn’t believe how much of a spectacle dubstep has become…

Skrillex- Ruffneck

…until I read this:

“…the idea of excess has been part of the popular music culture for decades. at first the excess was achieved simply by turning up the volume, until the sound could be felt as well as heard. more recently, the stage productions of popular musicians have emphasized visual spectacle and the acknowledgement of multiple media…the excess of media becomes an authentic experience, not in the sense that is corresponds to an external reality, but rather precisely because it does not feel compelled to refer to anything beyond itself…”

-(Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin on the theory of Remediation)

ultimately untitled

take
your
pick

Robert Koch’s “Gorom Sen” (Shlohmo Remix), would be an interesting choice for sure.

The Widdler’s “Lady Dub” if your in the mood for some laid back reggae style dub.

Deadmau5- Alone with You. Saw Deadmau5 (and Excision) 3 times last week, but he never played this song. Set was amazing, could’ve gone for more trance though. Enjoyed lightshow (and Mario video game clips) thoroughly. This song is good for letting yourself get lost in a trancy trip through space.

Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” remixed by Knight Riderz if you want some cool dubstep, an old school track with angelic female vocals

Pretty Light’s “Short Cut/Detour” if you’re in for some funky electro

Moleman’s “Imagine” if you appreciate flowing, shimmering liquid drum n bass

~Alexander Theroux

to me,
that hidden world holds what is untitled..
the place where ideas go
where we don’t know what it is for,
how it works,
who put it there.
without title, it hides from everyday life
and is all of a sudden
foreign

I forgot how fun rolling down hills is. Your pants get all twisted and I think if you’re not laughing by the bottom of the hill there’s something wrong with you.

At first the world seemed like a given- the buildings, the trees, the social structure. But as I’m unfolding all of this dimension’s complicated corners I’m discovering the complexity of it all, and just what makes up reality as I’ve been thrown into it. As I unfold more and more, life seems more and more astonishing. I almost can’t believe how multi-dimensional this one world can be. How much has lead up to the present moment. It’s incredible, literally, because it cannot be credited to one mind.

A fuse like this, between nature and culture, wouldn’t be undesirable. No lines, just dripping from one state to the next.

I may find some things untitled,
but I find this quite natural,
what makes me feel
the most at
home.
